Are All Fish Oil Tablets the Same? Only in the Fact That They Come From Fish

The vast majority of us are probably aware that omega 3 from oily fish is good for our health, particularly our heart, yet because there are so many different brands available at varying prices it can leave you wondering are all fish oil tablets the same and if not whats the difference? After all if they all have fish oil in the capsule why is one more expensive than the other? So in answer to the question "are all fish oil tablets the same?" the short answer to that is no.

There are several reasons why they are not the same, today I am going to highlight three that I think are the most important reasons. The thing with these tablets is that like most things in life you get what you pay for and if you are buying cheap tablets from supermarkets then you are going to be getting poor quality.

The first difference between a good and bad supplement is the freshness of the fish used. The vast majority of supplements use fish that has been frozen whilst the vessel they are on stays out at sea. Nothing wrong with this you may think, however the truth is that this process causes the fish to go rancid and increases oxidization. When you have a supplement made from rancid fish what you will find is that not long after taking it you will start to experience the most disgusting fishy tasting burps as the rancid fish repeats on you. Also the oxidization is bad for your health as it increases the freed radicles in your body. Good supplements will be made from fish that were caught fresh and processed the same day.

The second difference is in the purification process used. Unfortunately fish such as salmon and tuna contain toxins such as mercury and PCB's in their oils due to the pollution in the water that they come from. Because there is not a lot of regulation in the manufacture of these supplements the toxins are not always removed, or some of them are removed but levels are still quite high. The best type of supplement will have been through a process called molecular distillation. This is not a cheap process and that is why not many manufacturers do it, however it is very effective at removing the pollutants and making them safe for you to take on a daily basis.

The third difference is in the levels of DHA fat found in the supplement. The omega 3 from oily fish contains two fats EPA and DHA. Both of them are good for you but research is proving that your body responds better to higher levels of DHA. 99% of the supplements out there are higher in EPA fat, and while still good for you if you really want to increase your longevity and improve your health then you want to make sure you get one higher in DHA fat.

Hopefully this has answered the question are all fish oil tablets the same? You truly do get what you pay for and if you want to avoid consuming rancid polluted oil that is not going to boost your health that much then you need to make sure that you pay a little more and get a good quality supplement.
